Vari… is a thesis exhibition piece born out of a love for typography and technology. What started in my college's basement letterpress room, with the scarred and textural wood type I was surrounded by, grew into an appreciation of typography on the whole. I read books, researched, and learned as much as I could. Then, in 2019, I attended TypeCon, a conference for type lovers of all levels, where I first learned of variable fonts. Much like my fast obsession with wood type, I found myself absorbed, and I was shocked more people weren't talking about it.
Well, I learned a couple things. Firstly, variable fonts are really cool, and also really complicated. Secondly,
variable fonts are really new. Thirdly, if you’re not a type designer, variable fonts can seem really
intimidating. I realized many of my fellow designers knew little to nothing about variable fonts and *ahah* I could show them.
Vari... is a site, intended to be an at-your-leisure experience. Whether you’d like to learn the basics of what a variable font is, or be inspired by the magic of a variable font, you can choose the dose that is just right for you. Head over to the learn tab, or dive right in to the explore tab and play. My hope is that you’ll come out of it feeling as enamoured by variable fonts as I am.
I’m not a typographer, but I recognize that there’s really something to this, and there’s a future here just
waiting for us to designers to explore.
